A question from: Maxo

By david | Posted November 16th, 2009

(French) Public Mobile blog reader Maxo asked us a question about our bandwidth and it’s a good one.  We thought we’d share it (and our answer) with you.

Maxo:  Hi, I think that what scares people is the new bandwidth you’re using.  There is not one other company in America who uses it and that feeds our skepticism.   Have you done conclusive testing and are you not worried about facing unexpected surprises when you launch?

Public Mobile:  Hi Maxo.  Thanks for your questions. The spectrum that Public Mobile purchased is really no different to the rest of the spectrum that was auctioned last year by Industry Canada. In February this year we demonstrated this at a press conference in Toronto where we made a call over our recently purchased spectrum using mobile phone equipment that is commercially available. Similar spectrum is owned by Sprint in the United States.

We have a great network team here at Public Mobile and they’re working hard to ensure that our launch is problem free. Check back in tomorrow to see a video of Brian, our technical lead, and get a tour of one of our antenna sites.

What I don’t understand is how could Public Mobile be against Wind Mobile launching, and why would you side with the big 3 incubants on this issue. Wind Mobile will not hurt your share ofhte wireless market in Canada at all. The only reason I can think of is that you are in bed with one of the big 3. Makes sense to me.

  2. You only have one phone on your website. Will you be offering other models? If so, why haven’t you put them on your website?

Second comment is that your search box at the top of the screen is positioned incorrectly. It overlaps the “everybody talk” logo.

    Thankyou.

I don’t understand how Robbers and Bellus keep saying thet Public Mobile will be competition when they launch. the ONLY competition will be Wind Mobile. Dave Wireless will be some competition, but not as much as Wind will be. Public Mobile is not even close to any real competition

    @ Bruce:

Hi Bruce – We believe our products will provide consumers with value, simplicity and choice. It is true, our product is not designed for everyone. For example if you need data, our initial launch product won’t provide you with that. However, for value conscious people who just need unlimited talk and text, we’ll deliver great value.

Ok, I’ve been on your site and I like the unlimited option. However right now I am tied down to a Telus contract unti feb 2011 and can not benefit from the unlimited calling to anywhere in Canada for life. So I was wondering til when will PublicMobile have this offer for. It says pre- launch but I doubt you will get many to go to a unproven phone company. Even Fido had offered no system acess fee for while when they had comeout with their unlimited plan.

Will PublicMobile extend their unlimited calling to anywhere in Canada?

    Thanks

Hi! The pre-network launch offer will end soon, and unlimited calling anywhere in Canada is part of that offer.

Let’s say I decide to get my hands on a phone capable of running CDMA 800Mhz as well as EVDO. Any chance of me using an unlocked phone on your network. I have no use for your phones and with data on its way in the coming weeks as they have been saying I would like to use a different device.

Will this be at all possible?

Cheers and keep up the fantastic work. You guys are on the right path.

    That Guy.

Hi That Guy, to use our network you’ll have to use one of our handsets as your handset isn’t calibrated for Public Mobile’s network. We launched our first data ready phone today (see details at: http://www.publicmobile.ca/pmconsumer/phones/phoneDetail?phoneId=BUZZ ) and we’re currently working on bringing more new phones to market that will offer new features. As soon as a launch date is set we’ll post more details on our blog and facebook page.
