Here’s another great question from a Public Mobile blog reader that we thought we wanted to share with you.
Blade: I hear a lot of talk of “Talk&Text”, that’s all well and good. But what I want to know is what are your plans for DATA? Will you be providing affordable data plans? Will data be included in your standard $40 plan? Rogers/Fido have forced me to go the last 8 months *dies a little inside* without caller display or voice-mail (my friends all hate me now but… its the principle!) so I’m kinda used to it, but I’d like to know if at least voice-mail is included in your $40 plan.
Public Mobile: Hi Blade – Public Mobile will be launching with our $40 unlimited talk and text plan initially. We are building our network to accommodate data transmission so we can expand our offering to consumers in the future. As far as call display and voicemail, we are keeping the full details of our $40 unlimited talk and text plan from being released currently. Stay tuned as we’ll update our website to give full plan details as we get closer to launch.

$40 for talk & text sounds pretty good, especially if you include voicemail & caller id. Will your phones work outside the initial coverage area of your network (GTA)? Will you work on another carrier’s network if one travels outside your “zone”? Lastly, because you have no contracts (which sounds great) will you be charging full price for your handsets (ie: no subsidies)?
Thanks for the reply guys! I am eagerly looking forward to all the “juicy details” in the near future.
Public Mobile: Another person asked if someone can switch to your network using their current phone (with a SIM card). Will this be possible or will we have to purchase your handsets?
Hi Dave –
Thanks for your question. Unfortunately you will not be able to use old phones on the Public Mobile Network.
I also am interested in the data-side of the plan. About 10% of my phone usage is talking. The other 90% is data – maps, google, calender, email, etc.
Have you considered partnering with Google Voice/GrandCentral to get voicemail, etc? They’ve got a great system worked out. It would be great if it were brought it to Canada.
What Brian said in earlier comment, most of the users are not only used to data plans but it became more of our necessities; so once the data plans are up and running, I think alot more people will switch to your company. If Public Moblile is planning on charging additional fees for data usage, then we might be better off with our current service provider whereas with $ 44.00 (inc. tax) uncludes unlimited browsing, called id & voice mail, missed call alert, back up, 150 texts and MMS as well as cool phones. Not to mention unlimited talk time after 5 p.m. and some(200) daytime minutes billed by the second. So if Public mobile are just looking into the aspect of giving users unlimited talk & text; it’s not enough. Think about including some other add-ons within the $40 rate plan. Thanks.
