Summer isn’t the only thing to officially arrive in Montreal this week! The Public Mobile network is set to launch this Friday, June 25th. The launch marks the end of our pre-network offer of free unlimited Canadian long distance for life. That’s right, free, unlimited, Canadian, long distance, for life. It’s the beginning of a long distance relationship that everyone will love! So come on out and enjoy this first official week of summer by paying us a visit at one of our Public Mobile locations around town. To find a store, use our store locator.

OK so I have now had a week’s experience with Public Mobile. This is a mini review. The network is spotty, but better than I thought that it would be for a company this new. I live in the west island of Montreal, and there is no coverage there. I expect that there will be by September, and Public Mobile gave me the month of August for free. I am definitely and early adopter!

The call quality is not great. That is something that they will have to improve. It could be my phone. I am not sure. I suspect that it is the network though. Calls sound a bit muffled at times.

A few times I have placed a call and nothing has happened. Sometimes I have gotten a network repeater tone instead of a ring tone. There have been no dropped calls however. There have been many times when the person on the other end has complained about my phone.

I tried customer service a few times and it was an efficient and pleasant experience each time. The CSRs were helpful, efficient, and courteous.

So what is my conclusion? Public Mobile should have waited to go live for another couple of months. I am on the verge of returning my phone (if I can) and asking for a refund. A cellular service that has limitations of working from Windsor to Quebec City only and has no prospect of roaming because of the frequency that they are on is one thing, but not getting the basic service right is another.
