It’s that time of year, when people reflect on the year that was. Here at Public Mobile 2011 was a great year for us, and we’d like to thank you, our customers, for that. We are very grateful and would like to wish you and your family the very best of this Holiday Season and on into 2012.
Just a couple of quick notes that might help you over the next two weeks:
Did you get a Public Mobile phone in your stocking this year? You can follow these steps on or after Dec. 24th to set up your phone and get talking!
If you received a Grab and Go phone, follow the instructions in the package. Grab and Go phones are identified by Grab and GO stickers on the packaging.
If you received a phone purchased at a store, but not yet activated:
- Insert and charge the battery for your new phone. Once fully charged, turn the phone on.
- Check your signal bars to be sure you are in the coverage area.
- Dial *228 and then press SEND (the green phone icon). The Max and 762, because they are Android Smartphones are slightly different, you should press the Android.
- Listen for a voice message confirming you are set up.
Our regular Call Centre hours have been adjusted with the holidays over the next two weeks. Here are the hours we will be open:
- Saturday December 24th: 9am – 6pm

Public Mobile was one of the proud co-sponsors of the “Taste of Italy” event that took place on College Street in Toronto over the weekend of June 18th.
The 12th edition of the event was a huge – and delicious – success! Approximately 200,000 people were in attendance, all of them there to connect with the community and to take part in cultural activities. 45 local restaurants provided samples of their finest lasagna, lamb skewers, meatball sandwiches and fresh crêpes. The event also featured performances from aboriginal, jazz and independent musicians adding to the lively atmosphere!
What makes this kind of event particularly special for us is that we get to connect with the community, meet new people and learn more about what matters to them.
If you attended the ‘Taste of Little Italy’ event, please write in and tell us about some of the highlights!

Thanks to everyone who sent in their shots for the new campaign! Casting is now closed. Stay tuned for our new campaign coming soon.
———————————————
Let’s talk about a career in advertising.
If you’ve seen Public Mobile’s advertising campaign you know that we’d rather show super people than supermodels. And our new campaign is no different. Except this time, we’re giving you a chance to be a part of it.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Send a photo of you, in your best ‘Unlimited’ pose, to iwanttobeunlimited@publicmobile.ca. Make sure we can see you clearly in the picture. From the waist-up would be perfect.
- Include your first and last name, your phone number and the city you live in.
- The photograph you submit will not be used, under any circumstances, without your permission. All submissions will be permanently erased once the final selection is made.
- Persons under 18 will require parental consent to participate in the photo shoot.
- We’ll contact you to let you know if you’ll be included in this upcoming campaign.
- If you are included, we’ll contact you to provide all the details you’ll need to know about what happens next.
Thank you so much for wanting to be a part of this great campaign. We’ll talk to you soon.

You might have seen Lakshmi in one of our ads and we thought you would like get to know her better. Lakshmi is a mortgage agent, mother, wife, cook, a killer card player and an all around great person. When we first met her back in June, we were searching for real people for our ad campaign. We immediately liked her and chose her because she has such a wonderful smile.
Lakshmi was born in Bangalore, India, and now resides in Toronto. She calls home to India as often as she likes to talk to friends and family, so it’s important for her to have a good long distance plan. She calls her mom the most though, to keep her updated on what’s happening here in Canada but also because she thinks that there is no greater comfort than talking to your mother. Lakshmi is a mortgage specialist and has to make a lot of phone calls every day. She believes in the “old style” of communicating – phone vs. email – because there is less of a communications gap and she feels like she’s able to provide more personal service with a phone call rather than an email. So, she finds our unlimited talk plans quite handy.
If you don’t catch Lakshmi in one of our ads, look for her at the Little India Bazaar on Gerrard Street in Toronto – she’ll be there shopping for the best saris in town. Tell her we say hi.

Happy holidays and best wishes for the New Year from all of us at Public Mobile.
As we near the end of 2010, we can’t help but reflect back on the year we’ve had and the achievements that were made. The people that have been hired and the team we built; receiving our license from the government; launching our network in Toronto and Montreal; and building stores and teaming up with all our retail partners. But most of all, we want to thank all the Canadians who chose Public Mobile and helped us improve by providing feedback and support. As fondly as we look back at 2010 and all that it held, we’re looking forward to an exciting 2011.
Just a quick reminder that we’ll be taking some time off to get into the holiday spirit with our family and friends but look forward to talking to you again in January.

We want to highlight a special customer this week, one who has made our Friendship Pays Program pay off for him. Carlos, a Toronto resident of Portuguese decent and The owner of a DJ and sound company called “Sunset Productions”, has referred 16 friends to Public Mobile in the last three months! We gave him a call to find out how he did it. Maybe you can use his technique to get a $20 referral credit for every friend that you get to sign up with us.
PM: So Carlos, why Public Mobile?
Carlos: Because of the great pricing, the unlimited Canadian long distance plan and the overseas long distance plan. I get to call my mom who still lives in Portugal all of the time!
PM: How did you get all of these people to sign up with us?
Carlos: I meet a lot of people in my business, people who are always on the go and need to call the office or stay in touch with their kids who are running around the city. They don’t need fancyshmancy phones. What they need is a plan that will allow them to talk as much as they want for as long as they want, without having to worry about what the cell phone bill will be at the end of the month. So, I tell them about Public Mobile. I’m really happy with the service and the plans are unbeatable. I refer them to the store on College Street. So far, I’ve referred a lot of my family members, who need to call back home to Portugal, and a lot of my friends and business associates have signed up with you guys as well. I’ve heard no complaints so far! I’m going to keep referring people to Public Mobile; my goal is to get one year of free service.
PM: Can you give us your secret? What’s your “pitch”? I’m sure our customers want to know!
Carlos: (Laughs). You know what? I don’t have one! I just tell it like it is. I shopped around before I chose you guys, and honestly, the value for my dollar was just the best at Public Mobile.
PM: Thanks Carlos!
Carlos: And…It might help that I make them a CD of their favourite music afterwards!
Our Friendship Pays Program is running until December 31st.

The summer is sadly over, but we had such a great time from May to September sponsoring youth soccer teams in Montreal and Toronto. Public Mobile supported kids aged 4 to 12 from various teams from the house league division this past season. In total we sponsored 91 teams, with 65 teams from Toronto and 26 teams from Montreal. The teams in Toronto played for clubs in North Toronto, Toronto West, Rexdale, Scarborough and downtown/central Toronto. In Montreal the teams played for clubs in Saint-Laurent, the South West, Ville Marie, the Plateau Mont-Royal and Ahuntsic/Cartierville.
We can’t wait for next season to begin.

Gateway Newstand locations have a new look and a new partner. Starting today, the newsstand operator is selling Public Mobile phones and allowing customers to pay their bills at select Gateway locations.
A total of 60 Gateway stores are now co-branded with Public Mobile signs and also provide Public Mobile services. By January there will be a total of 120 stores carrying the Gateway /Public Mobile banner.
The stores feature innovative formats in countertop displays as well as floor stands in the larger locations. There is also a simple self-serve model where customers can select from several available handsets, including the new ZTE-C70 priced at $50. This allows a customer to purchase a phone and a $24 unlimited talk plan and leave the store for under $75. Public Mobile also has a limited time offer that is good at all Gateway locations. Customers receive a discount on all handsets. At Gateway stores that means people can choose between the ZTE C-70 for $50 and the Kyocera Tomo for $80 ($30 off the regular price). The offer ends on October 3rd.

Going back to school is expensive and many families can’t afford to buy everything their children need to start the year off right.
That’s why we’re giving away 5,000 back to school supply kits for elementary and high school students in Toronto and Montreal.
We identified the most needed items for elementary and high school students and put together specific supply kits for each group: elementary school students will receive a spiral bound notebook and a pencil case containing a pencil, pen and eraser, while high school students receive a scientific calculator. Our goal is to provide school supplies to children who might otherwise go without.
Public Mobile also helps families manage tight budgets by providing unlimited talk and text at a fixed price. Public Mobile’s plans are all unlimited, which means parents will never be surprised by price, no matter how much their children talk or text.
We want to help hard-working families by giving kids the tools they need to succeed. Students can stop by any one of our stores to receive the free school supplies kit (limit one kit per student, kits available while supplies last). Our store locater can be found online at www.publicmobile.ca.

So You Think You Can Dance Canada’s Jayme Rae Dailey says she can’t live without her cellphone. Jayme Rae appeared on CTV Montreal’s news at noon and on WoW tv in Toronto providing students with back to school tips. Among them, Jayme Rae says students can stay on track with their budget by choosing a cell phone plan with a predictable price and unlimited talk and text so they aren’t surprised by their bills.
Keeping in touch with friends and family around the world is important to Jayme Rae. She recommends an unlimited long distance or overseas calling plan like the ones offered by Public Mobile so that students can stay in touch without cutting calls short.

Some of Jayme Rae’s other back to school tips include:
- Make a budget and stick to it
- Keep an agenda to stay on track
- Write down your budget, your appointments, and expenses. Re-evaluate your budget before it gets out of control
- Eat cheap but eat well
- Try Jayme Rae’s Power Pancake recipe: mix two egg whites with a packet of instant oatmeal. Fry lightly in a non-stick pan, flipping once.
Jayme Rae Dailey was a top three finalist in the 2009 season of So You Think You Can Dance Canada.

Public Mobile was all over Toronto in July. First, we were at the Salsa during the St.Clair Street Festival on July 17th and 18th. If you were there you saw everybody having fun, dancing in the street amongst great food, dance lessons and of course, amazing music. Maybe you even spotted some of our crew dancing (or trying to dance) and meeting as many of you as possible.
Then, we were at the New Bloor Festival on July 24th to celebrate our local business, community, arts and culture in the middle of the street. We absolutely loved the market-feel, events, activities, exhibitions and the chance to connect, share and learn from all the locals from all the different communities.
It was so great to meet and chat with so many of you at these two festivals. Thanks for showing up and learning a little bit more about Public Mobile.

As you may already know, we attended the Festival Nuits d’Afrique from July 13th to 25th. Our Public Mobile booth was in the village (Place Émilie Gamelin) where we had the chance to meet tons of great people.
The festival attracted thousands of people and the atmosphere was amazing. It gave people the opportunity to discover young artists like Mallu Magalhaes, Rommel Ribiero and Bambara Trans (the 2010 winners of the révélation Radio-Canada Musique prize). The Festival Nuits d’Afrique also had the honour of presenting great artists like Kassav’ on the big Metropolis stage for the closing night.
We hope to see you there next year !

On May 25th, Public Mobile celebrated the network launch in Toronto with their dealers and employees. They enjoyed good food, entertainment and had a panel discussion with the executive team and Public Mobile’s handset vendors, Samsung, Kyocera and ZTE. We’re looking forward to a similar celebration at the end of June as we turn on the network in Montreal.
