A very friendly man

By david | Posted November 29th, 2010

We want to highlight a special customer this week, one who has made our Friendship Pays Program pay off for him. Carlos, a Toronto resident of Portuguese decent and The owner of a DJ and sound company called “Sunset Productions”, has referred 16 friends to Public Mobile in the last three months! We gave him a call to find out how he did it. Maybe you can use his technique to get a $20 referral credit for every friend that you get to sign up with us.

PM: So Carlos, why Public Mobile?
Carlos: Because of the great pricing, the unlimited Canadian long distance plan and the overseas long distance plan. I get to call my mom who still lives in Portugal all of the time!

PM: How did you get all of these people to sign up with us?
Carlos: I meet a lot of people in my business, people who are always on the go and need to call the office or stay in touch with their kids who are running around the city. They don’t need fancyshmancy phones. What they need is a plan that will allow them to talk as much as they want for as long as they want, without having to worry about what the cell phone bill will be at the end of the month. So, I tell them about Public Mobile. I’m really happy with the service and the plans are unbeatable. I refer them to the store on College Street. So far, I’ve referred a lot of my family members, who need to call back home to Portugal, and a lot of my friends and business associates have signed up with you guys as well. I’ve heard no complaints so far! I’m going to keep referring people to Public Mobile; my goal is to get one year of free service.

PM: Can you give us your secret? What’s your “pitch”? I’m sure our customers want to know!
Carlos: (Laughs). You know what? I don’t have one! I just tell it like it is. I shopped around before I chose you guys, and honestly, the value for my dollar was just the best at Public Mobile.

PM: Thanks Carlos!
Carlos: And…It might help that I make them a CD of their favourite music afterwards!

Our Friendship Pays Program is running until December 31st.

Unlimited Fun in Toronto

By david | Posted August 5th, 2010

Public Mobile was all over Toronto in July. First, we were at the Salsa during the St.Clair Street Festival on July 17th and 18th. If you were there you saw everybody having fun, dancing in the street amongst great food, dance lessons and of course, amazing music. Maybe you even spotted some of our crew dancing (or trying to dance) and meeting as many of you as possible.

Then, we were at the New Bloor Festival on July 24th to celebrate our local business, community, arts and culture in the middle of the street. We absolutely loved the market-feel, events, activities, exhibitions and the chance to connect, share and learn from all the locals from all the different communities.

It was so great to meet and chat with so many of you at these two festivals. Thanks for showing up and learning a little bit more about Public Mobile.

Unlimited fun at the Festival International Nuits d’Afrique 2010

By david | Posted August 4th, 2010

As you may already know, we attended the Festival Nuits d’Afrique from July 13th to 25th. Our Public Mobile booth was in the village (Place Émilie Gamelin) where we had the chance to meet tons of great people.

The festival attracted thousands of people and the atmosphere was amazing. It gave people the opportunity to discover young artists like Mallu Magalhaes, Rommel Ribiero and Bambara Trans (the 2010 winners of the révélation Radio-Canada Musique prize). The Festival Nuits d’Afrique also had the honour of presenting great artists like Kassav’ on the big Metropolis stage for the closing night.

We hope to see you there next year !

Country suggestions for the unlimited overseas long distance

By david | Posted July 29th, 2010

Thanks for your suggestions of all the countries you’d like to see included in our overseas long distance feature. There were many, many different countries requested (with some of the more popular requests being Haiti and Pakistan). While we are always working to add new countries, we do look at what we are charged to connect these calls, and how we can offer unlimited service for our customers. In some cases it currently just isn’t possible.

We have been able to include 190  countries in our unlimited international text feature, which is included in our $40 talk and text plan.

We’ll continue to work on ways we can add these countries to our overseas calling feature, but in the near future we don’t see a large decline in the costs for calling these countries, so any changes won’t be immediate.

We hope you understand. Thanks again for all your comments and suggestions, we really appreciate them.

Public Mobile at Festival Nuits d’Afrique 2010

By david | Posted July 23rd, 2010

We’re proud to announce that we will be attending the 24th edition of Festival Nuits d’Afrique. The Festival is a leading event in Montreal and was the 2005 and 2007 winner of Montreal’s Excellence in Tourism Awards at the Gala des Grands Prix du Tourisme Quebecois.

Hosting some 80,000 visitors, the Village des Nuits d’Afrique at Place Émilie-Gamelin will have more than 400 artists play 53 concerts in 5 different concert halls. You’ll also be able to find our team there, and they’ll be able to answer any questions you have about Public Mobile. Here’s hoping you come see us at the Festival Nuits d’Afrique 2010!
The Festival will run from July 13-25. More details about the program and artists here at http://www.festivalnuitsdafrique.com/en.

Unlimited overseas long distance and international texting has arrived

By david | Posted July 15th, 2010

Beginning today, talking and texting to countries outside of North America just got easier.

For just $15 per month you can add the unlimited overseas long distance feature to your existing $40 plan allowing you to dial 45 countries and have unlimited talk with your family and friends.

We’ve seen the blog comments asking us to add countries such as Haiti, Jamaica, Lebanon, Pakistan, Philippines, Bangladesh,  Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Guyana, Trinidad, Algeria St. Vincent, Iraq, Bahamas, Morocco and more. We are working hard and doing our best to add more countries; we most recently added Guadeloupe to the list, as well as adding mobile phones in Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and Guam.  As much as we’d always like to be adding countries to the overseas long distance plan, sometimes conditions beyond our control necessitate removing a country. We’re sorry to let you know this past week we had to remove Jordan from the plan due to a Jordanian government tax that was implemented that affected the connection charges.  We will continue to update you as we add new countries.

In addition to launching overseas long distance, we’re also adding international text to the $40 plan tomorrow which will allow you to send texts to 190 countries around the world. For all those asking us to add additional countries to the overseas long distance feature, take a look at the list of countries we provide international texting to. Many of the countries you’ve asked for are now included, so you’ll be able to text friends and family around the world as part of our unlimited talk and text plan.

Our favourite color! For everyone who stopped by, we were happy to have met you.

Thanks to Steve, the owner of the 943 Mont-Royal East location who provided the pictures. To find the store and its business hours, use our Store Locator on the Public Mobile website.

Do you know Peter Bregg?

By david | Posted April 30th, 2010

Have you seen our ads out on the street? If you have, you have been looking at the work of one of Canada’s most accomplished photographers, Peter Bregg. Peter has spent 40 years covering events around the world like the Vietnam War (1973), Iran hostage crisis (1979), Poland’s Solidarity movement (1981), and the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York. Peter also at various points worked as either a photographer or photo editor for the Associated Press, Canadian Press, Maclean’s magazine and HELLO! Magazine.

Besides being a great photographer, Peter has a big heart and has also donated his time to PhotoSensitive, a collective of photographers who use their talents towards social justice. Peter’s work within PhotoSensitive has taken him to locations such as Mozambique, Rwanda and Zambia. Images from the PhotoSensitive and the causes they represent can be seen at www.photoSensitive.com.

Public Mobile feels really lucky that Peter came to shoot our photos – we think they look great.

The Perfect Plan

By david | Posted April 14th, 2010

Everyone has a phone for a different reason- some for work, some for social, some for both- some receive more calls, some do the dialing, while others are busy texting. Whatever the reason, your needs aren’t necessarily matching what you’re paying for. We want to know what YOUR ideal plan is.

Total Cell Phone Satisfaction

By david | Posted March 30th, 2010

Being satisfied with your cell phone plan isn’t such a crazy notion is it? Then why is it that so many of us aren’t? Would you be surprised to learn that the majority of the people we talked to said they aren’t entirely happy with what they’re being offered- some are even anticipating the end of their contracts. We spoke to a few Montrealers to find out why they’re unhappy. The more we know, the better Public Mobile can be.

Alek in the office – Part 1

By david | Posted December 3rd, 2009

We’ve had some questions recently on where Public Mobile fits in the mobile phone marketplace, and where we see ourselves in the future. We are hard at work building a business for value-conscious customers who are not well served by the current incumbents. We want to build a company that customers, our employees and our investors can be very proud of.

We also asked the question to Alek, and here’s what he had to say on where he sees Public Mobile in 5 years.
